Monthly HTTPS Statistics across the Caribbean
as at July 5, 2021.

HTTPS protects the communication between users' browsers and web servers from being intercepted and tampered with by attackers. It also protects the privacy of a user's browsing session.
On the 5th of each month we identify and analyse thousands of domains relating to Caribbean businesses and people.
The analysis checks how many of those domains automatically connect over HTTPS when visited.
Less than 50% is Poor, 50-74% is Average and 75% and higher is Excellent.

Why is HTTPS important?

"You should always protect all of your websites with HTTPS, even if they don’t handle sensitive communications. Aside from providing critical security and data integrity for both your websites and your users' personal information, HTTPS is a requirement for many new browser features, particularly those required for progressive web apps." Source: web.dev/why-https-matters.

There are 3 core reasons:

  • 1. HTTPS protects the integrity of data being communicated.
  • 2. HTTPS protects the privacy and security of users.
  • 3. HTTPS is the future of the web.
How to implement HTTPS?

You can implement HTTPS by getting an SSL certificate from a certificate authority (CA). You can buy an SSL certificate or get one for free. The certificate is what allows the "HTTPS" to show before your domain name in web browsers.

Some hosting providers offer an almost automatic setup for HTTPS while others ask you to install the certificate yourself and set up your redirects. It usually depends on the hosting plan you have.

Many web hosting companies have their own way to implement HTTPS on websites they host. Please check your hosting provider's help guides on how they support adding HTTPS.
